Beacon lighting and Civic service

The Mayor of Stockport invites all the Borough’s residents to mark the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II with a special civic service at St Mary’s Church in the Market Place at 8:30pm on Thursday 2nd June followed by the lighting of a beacon outside the church at 9:45pm.

The service will be conducted by the Bishop of Stockport, Reverend Sam Corley and is open to people of any religion.

The beacon will be lit by the Mayor, Councillor David Wilson, accompanied by Professor Robina Shah DL on behalf of the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester and representing Her Majesty the Queen. As part of the national beacon lighting programme the beacon will be one of more than 2,000 other beacons throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories, and one in each of the capital cities of Commonwealth countries.

This promises to be a memorable event in the heart of Stockport’s historic Market Place.

Free parking across the borough

To help make celebrating even easier, the council is waiving all fees in council-owned car parks and on street parking across Stockport.

When? All weekend long – from 2nd – 5th June

Stockport's Secret Party

The Underbanks will play host to Stockport’s worst kept secret – the Secret Party! Join in to enjoy live music, local food and drink and lots of activities for families to enjoy. The Heritage Library will also have a stall with resources and information to help residents get involved.

A Jubilee Trail at Stockport Museums

Based on the ‘Queen’s Hat’ book series by Steve Anthony. Follow the Queen’s Hat and find the drawings from the book hidden round the museum. You’ll be able to read the story in our family gallery as well.

Celebrations at the Town Hall

The Town Hall will be lit up in purple to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee from 2nd – 5th June. The council will also be flying the official Jubilee flag above the town hall from 3rd – 5th, with the Union Jack being flown to celebrate the coronation.

Tree planting

To commemorate the Platinum Jubilee, we will be continuing to support the Queen’s Green Canopy tree planting initiative. The Mayor will plant a tree at the town hall, and a tree will be provided to every school in the borough. This will take place in November 2022 to coincide with the best time to plant new trees. Each tree will be provided with a commemorative plaque marking the Jubilee.
